What Is A Joined VoV Dataset?

A Joined Dataset will return a single result from the selected Views based on the defined linking relationship.  When the Views are joined together, the individual Views' results are imported into a local MS SQL database and then joined using the relationship defined during the VoV build process.

Joined Datasets require MDS is setup in your VDM installation.  For more information on setting up MDS, please review this article.

Why Create A Joined VoV Dataset?

Datasets are useful when you need to combine disparate Views into a single data source for Finished Reports or Visualize.  Users often build a Dataset when they want to combine multiple Views into a single Excel workbook where each View is a separate spreadsheet.

Steps For Creating A Joined VoV Dataset

1. Click on the VoV Builder tab on the navigation bar. 

2. Select BuildDataSet on the VoVOption property.

3. Click on Add View, then browse to and select your View.  Repeat the Add View process for each View.

4. Establish a relationship between the Views.  

To add a new join/link, select the key field from one View, drag and drop it the corresponding key field in the second View. VDM will ask what type of join you would like to establish; Equal (=) – Implicit, Equal (JOIN) –Explicit, Left, or Right. If you have more than two Views, repeat the task for each View.

5. Click Save on the Ribbon Bar to save your VoV.

6. Run the VoV.

NOTE: You will need to be on the Tables and Fields section NOT VoV builder to run the VoV.

When VoV_Dataset_Linked.vdmv is executed, View1.vdm and View2.vdm are ran against the defined connection, and the details from each View are added to the MDS database.  A secondary query is then constructed and executed automatically against the MDS database, producing a single result:
