Save and Upload Views to WebReports

The Save and Upload option in VDM allows you to save the current View locally and upload it to WebReports.

This option is useful when you are working with a single View and want to quickly update the version stored in WebReports.

Before You Begin

Before using Save and Upload:

  • VDM must be connected to a valid WebReports connection profile.
  • The WebReports tab is only visible when a WebReports connection profile is selected.
  • Your WebReports user must have the appropriate permissions to access and update Views.
  • The View can be opened either from WebReports or from a local VDM file.

Open the View You Want to Update

You can work with a View in either of the following ways.

Open a View from WebReports

  1. Select the appropriate WebReports connection profile in VDM.
  2. Open the WebReports tab.
  3. Click Open.

The Open window displays the Views that are available in WebReports.

  1. Select the View you want to open.

The View opens directly in VDM.

Note: Opening a View from WebReports does not prompt you to save it locally. The save prompt appears later when you use Save and Upload, if a local save is required.

Open a View Locally

You can also open an existing local View before uploading it to WebReports.

  1. Open the Home tab.
  2. Open the local View you want to work with.
  3. Make any required changes.

You can then use WebReports > Save and Upload to upload the current View to WebReports.

Version Compatibility Warning

When working with Views from WebReports, VDM may display a warning if the installed VDM version and WebReports version do not match.

The message identifies the installed VDM and WebReports versions and recommends updating WebReports to match VDM.

Mismatched versions may cause issues when reading or executing Views.

  • Click Yes to continue.
  • Click No to cancel.

For best compatibility, VDM and WebReports should be kept on matching versions whenever possible.

Make Changes to the View

After the View is open in VDM, make any required changes.

This can include changes to:

  • Tables and Fields
  • Parameters
  • Filters
  • Advanced Query
  • Finished Reports
  • Visualize content
  • Other View settings

When your changes are complete, use Save and Upload to save the current View locally, if needed, and upload it to WebReports.

Save and Upload the View

  1. Make sure the correct WebReports connection profile is selected.
  2. Select the WebReports tab.
  3. Click Save and Upload.

VDM works with the View that is currently open, whether it was opened from WebReports or from a local file.

When VDM Prompts You to Save

The save prompt does not necessarily appear every time you use Save and Upload.

VDM may prompt you to save when:

  • The View is new and has not been saved locally.
  • The View was opened from WebReports and has not yet been saved locally.
  • The View contains changes that have not been saved.
  • No View is currently open and VDM requires you to select or save a View before continuing.

If prompted, select the location where you want to save the local VDM file.

Overwriting an Existing Local View

If a View with the same file name already exists in the selected save location, VDM prompts you to confirm whether you want to overwrite the existing local file.

Choose whether to replace the existing file.

After the local save is completed, VDM continues with the upload to WebReports.

Upload the View to WebReports

After any required local save is completed, VDM uploads the current View to WebReports.

When updating an existing WebReports View, the uploaded version replaces the current View definition.

Existing WebReports assignments remain associated with the View, so the report does not need to be reassigned after each update.

Troubleshooting: WebReports Version Reads 0.0.0

If VDM displays a message indicating that the WebReports version is reading 0.0.0, VDM is unable to properly read the WebReports connection.

This can indicate:

  • The WebReports connection profile is not configured correctly.
  • The WebReports user does not have the required permissions.
  • The required Publisher connection profile has not been assigned to the WebReports user.
  • VDM cannot read the connection information associated with the WebReports account.

Verify the WebReports connection settings and confirm that the correct permissions and connection profiles are assigned to the user.

Save and Upload vs. Publish

Use Save and Upload when you are:

  • Working with a single View.
  • Updating an existing WebReports View.
  • Opening a View locally, making changes, and uploading it to WebReports.
  • Opening a View from WebReports, making changes, and uploading the updated version.

Use Publish when you need to:

  • Upload multiple Views.
  • Publish Views to one or more WebReports environments.
  • Perform a larger deployment of Views.
