Ask Bridgit helps you turn a reporting request into a query that you can review, run and save in VDM. You can describe the information you need, answer questions about the request and refine the report without starting over.
Before You Begin
Bridgit AI must be configured with an approved OpenAI API key before you begin. See Bridgit AI Overview and Usage Guide for setup information.
- Open a working Connection Profile with permission to read the data you need.
- Start with a new View, or save a copy of an existing View before changing it.
- Know the result you want, including the date range, grouping, calculations and any exclusions. If a business calculation is unfamiliar, obtain its definition rather than asking Bridgit to guess.
Open Ask Bridgit
- Open VDM and select the connection you want to use.
- Select the Ask Bridgit icon in the main toolbar.
- If the chat offers a Focus selection in its + menu, select Query Building. Use this focus for database queries rather than General Chat.
Choose How Queries Are Applied
For a workflow where you review the query before running it, open the chat’s + menu and review these options:
| Option | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Auto Run | Turn this off when you want to decide when the query runs. When enabled, it allows a query to run after validation succeeds. |
| Preview changes | Turn this on to review proposed SQL changes before they replace Advanced Query. |
When a SQL review is shown, use Apply to accept the selected changes or Discard to leave the current query in place. An Apply & Run action also requests execution; review the button before selecting it.
Describe the Report You Need
Enter your request in the chat field and select Send. Include enough detail to identify the population and the expected output. For example:
Show the total quantity by category for the selected date range. Include categories with activity, sort the largest total first, and show the category and total quantity.
Replace these example terms with the terminology used in your database. If Bridgit asks a question, answer it in the same conversation. Clarifications help resolve missing definitions, ambiguous fields or reporting rules.
Review the Proposed Query
- Check that the selected connection and source fields are correct.
- Review the filters, date boundaries, joins, grouping and calculations.
- Check whether an existing query was reused or a new query was prepared.
- If Preview changes is enabled, review the SQL changes before applying them.
Note: A query that passes validation can still express the wrong business rule. Confirm the meaning of calculated values and the effect of joins before relying on the results.
Run and Verify the Results
- If Auto Run is off, request execution in chat, such as Run this query, or select Run View after applying the query.
- Wait for the current execution to finish. A proposed query or an acknowledgment is not a completed result.
- Review the returned columns and row count in the Data Grids.
- Compare several records and any important totals with a known source or an approved existing report.
- If the result needs adjustment, describe the change in the same conversation, then review and run the revised query.
Save the View
Select Save or Save As after verifying the result. Use a descriptive View name. Save a separate copy when you need to retain the previous version.
If the Result Is Not What You Expected
Tell Bridgit what differs from the intended result. Include the relevant field, filter or calculation and what you expected to see. If a query cannot run, retain the exact error message. For further help, see Troubleshooting Bridgit AI.
