Article Goal
Learn how to clear orphaned subreports in a View’s Finished Report by saving the report within the Finished Reports Designer using the appropriate version of VDM.
What Are Orphaned Subreports?
Orphaned subreports are subreports still embedded in the View file but no longer attached to the Finished Report layout. These can occur in older VDM versions when the linkage between the subreport and the designer becomes corrupted or lost.
Note: Orphaned subreports may lead to report rendering errors or unexpected behavior during preview or export.
Why Use This Process?
Clearing orphaned subreports ensures:
Your Finished Report is clean and doesn't contain unused elements.
Errors caused by detached subreports are prevented.
The View remains compatible with newer versions of VDM.
Use Case: You're modifying or exporting an older View and experiencing errors or unexpected visuals due to outdated subreports.
Where Is This Done?
You perform this action inside the Finished Reports Designer. Simply saving the report from within the designer removes orphaned subreports automatically.
Important: Always make a backup of your View before saving over it.
Steps to Clear Orphaned Subreports
Step 1: Update VDM
Ensure you're using VDM version 10.2.5.0 or higher. This version includes support for clearing orphaned subreports. If an update is available, click on the Help tab inside VDM and then update.
Step 2: Create Backups
Before making any changes, create copies of your View files / confirm there is a recent view in the Auto Save Backup folder.
Step 3: Open the View in Designer
Open the View and navigate into the Finished Reports Designer.
Step 4: Save the Finished Report
Once inside the designer, click Save to commit the layout. This automatically removes any orphaned subreports.
Step 5: Verify
Reopen or re-run the View to verify the orphaned subreports are cleared and the report functions as expected.
Article Summary
Older versions of VDM could sometimes cause Finished Reports to retain orphaned subreports—elements still in the View file but no longer used. To clean these up, simply update VDM to at least version 10.2.5.0, open the Finished Reports Designer, and save the report. Always back up your View beforehand to avoid unintentional data loss.
