Article Goal
Guide users through the process of refreshing Pivot Grid fields after modifying a query while preserving the existing Pivot Grid layout and configuration.
Overview
When a query is modified, the available fields within a Pivot Grid may change. Historically, refreshing the Pivot Grid field list could require rebuilding portions of the Pivot layout.
The Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot) feature refreshes the Pivot Grid field list while retaining existing Pivot Grid configuration whenever possible.
This helps reduce the amount of manual reconfiguration required after making changes to a View.
When to Use Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot)
Use this feature when:
- New fields have been added to a query.
- Existing fields have been renamed or modified.
- Additional tables have been added to a View.
- Query changes require the Pivot Grid field list to be refreshed.
- You want to update available Pivot fields without rebuilding the entire Pivot layout.
Refreshing Pivot Grid Fields
Step 1: Modify the View
- Open an existing View that contains a Pivot Grid.
- Make the necessary query changes.
- Save the View.
- Select Run View to refresh the data.
Step 2: Open the Pivot Grid
- Navigate to the Pivot Grid tab.
- Verify that the existing Pivot layout is displayed.
Step 3: Reload Available Fields
- Right-click anywhere inside the Pivot Grid.
- Select Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot).
Note: Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot) is available from the Pivot Grid right-click menu.
The Pivot Grid refreshes the available field list and attempts to retain the existing layout configuration.
What Is Preserved
When possible, the following Pivot Grid settings are retained:
- Row fields
- Column fields
- Summary fields
- Filters
- Sorting
- Grouping
- Formatting
- Field captions
This allows users to continue working with their existing Pivot layout after query changes have been made.
When Fields Have Been Removed
If a field referenced by the Pivot Grid no longer exists in the query:
- The removed field is excluded from the Pivot configuration.
- Remaining fields and settings are preserved whenever possible.
- Users may need to manually replace fields that no longer exist.
Benefits
Using Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot) helps:
- Reduce Pivot Grid rework after query modifications.
- Preserve existing Pivot configurations.
- Improve productivity when developing or maintaining Views.
- Simplify updates to Pivot-based reporting and analysis.
Notes
Note: The ability to preserve layout settings depends on the availability of the fields referenced by the existing Pivot configuration.
Note: If a field is removed from the query, any Pivot configuration that depends on that field may require manual adjustment.
Article Summary
The Reload Fields (Preserve Pivot) feature allows users to refresh the available Pivot Grid field list after modifying a query while preserving existing layout settings whenever possible. This reduces the need to rebuild Pivot configurations and simplifies ongoing View maintenance.
