Article Goal
To explain how to enable and use the Transpose Detail and Transpose Summary grid view-level options in VDM, allowing users to flip rows and columns for enhanced data display.
What Is Transposing in VDM?
Transposing is a feature that flips rows and columns in a data grid. In a transposed view:
-
The first field in your dataset becomes the column header
-
Original column headers become row labels
This layout is particularly useful for creating user-friendly summaries or aligning data in a format more suitable for presentations or analysis.
Why Use Transpose?
Transposing can:
-
Enhance readability of pivot-like data
-
Help structure data for display in dashboards
-
Allow side-by-side comparisons of values across rows that were previously columns
🔁 This feature is available for both Detail and Summary grids and can be toggled on/off per grid.
🛑 Important Note About Null Values:
If your data includesNULLvalues in the fields used for transposing, you may encounter an error:
✅ Solution: Filter out or exclude records with NULLs in the transposed column or row fields.

Steps to Use Transpose Detail or Summary Grid in VDM
Step 1: Open and Run a View
-
Launch VDM and open an existing view
-
Click Run to execute the query and generate your Detail and/or Summary grids
Step 2: Access the View Options Ribbon
-
Click the View Options tab from the ribbon at the top of the screen
🛠️ This is where grid-related settings are controlled.
Step 3: Enable Transpose Options
-
Locate the settings:
-
Transpose Detail
-
Transpose Summary
-
-
Enable either or both, depending on the grid you wish to transpose
🔧 These are view-level options and must be enabled individually for each view.
Step 4: Toggle Transpose Mode for a Specific Grid
-
Expand the dropdown on the desired Data Grid (Detail or Summary)
-
Choose between:
-
Regular Mode
-
Transposed Mode
-
📌 This step lets you switch dynamically between transposed and standard layout views.
The first field in your query results becomes the column header when transposing
If you want a specific field as the column header, move it to the top of the field list
🧠 This ensures your transposed table displays as expected.
📊 Example Output Comparison
Regular Data Example
-
Rows represent records
-
Columns are field names (e.g.,
UserName,Region,TotalSales)
Transposed Data Example
-
UserNamebecomes columns -
Each original column name (like
TotalSales) becomes a row label
Article Summary
This article explains how to use VDM's Transpose Detail and Summary Grid features to flip the orientation of grid data—turning rows into columns and vice versa. Transposing allows for clearer analysis in specific reporting scenarios, but requires consideration of field order and handling of null values.
