Summary
This article explains how users can efficiently navigate and analyze logs within VDM using the platform’s built-in grid and navigation features. It describes how logs provide valuable system information for troubleshooting and monitoring activity, while also showing users how to group logs by column categories, filter entries to display only relevant information such as warnings or errors, and sort logs in ascending or descending order to quickly locate important details.
We recommend checking out our Log Overview Article to get a better understanding of what is being presented in the Logs.
Selecting a Date and Time Range for Log File Collection
Open VDM and navigate to the Logs menu. If you have not clicked Refresh since opening VDM, the Logs page will initially appear blank. Start by selecting an appropriate date range, ensuring the logs you are searching for fall within that range. By default, the date range begins 24 hours prior to the current time and extends 24 hours into the future.
Tip: Refresh the logs each time the date range is modified to load the updated results.
Grouping
Grouping in VDM is the process of organizing data records into categories based on shared values or attributes. Instead of viewing individual records separately, grouping combines related data together to make analysis easier and more meaningful. Grouping data within the grid is as simple as dragging and dropping the column header (field) you want to group by into the top section labeled “Drag a column header here to group by that column.”
Step 1: Drag a column header into the grouping section at the top of the grid.
In this example, the logs are grouped by Log Type, organizing entries into categories such as Error, Info, Success, and Warning.
Filtering
Log filtering in VDM is the process of narrowing down log data to display only the records that match specific conditions or criteria. It helps users quickly identify relevant events, errors, or system activities by excluding unnecessary information.
Step 1: Move your mouse over a column header and click the filter icon.
Step 2: Select the values you want to filter on.
In this example, the logs are being filtered by Log Type: Error.
Sorting
Sorting in VDM is the process of arranging data in a specific order based on selected fields or values. It helps users organize information to make it easier to read and analyze. Data can be sorted in ascending order (A–Z, lowest to highest, oldest to newest) or descending order (Z–A, highest to lowest, newest to oldest). Sorting within the grid is as simple as clicking the column header (field) you want to sort by.
Step 1: Click the column header to change the sort order. The active sort direction is indicated by the arrow displayed on the sorted column.
