Learn how to configure the Insights settings in VDM to optimize how layouts and data are loaded, stored, and displayed when launching Insights.
What Are Insights Settings?
The Insights section in VDM allows users to explore exported data in a visual and interactive format. To tailor your experience, VDM provides a group of configurable settings that control where data is loaded from, how layouts are handled, and how Insights behaves on application launch.
There are four key settings associated with Insights:
Data Location
Default Layout
Launch on Load
Layout Location
Why Configure Insights Settings?
Proper configuration of Insights settings can greatly streamline your workflow. Whether you're viewing scheduled report data or opening saved dashboards, these settings ensure everything loads the way you expect.
Tip: If Insights is part of your daily reporting routine, enabling “Launch on Load” can save time by opening it immediately with your preferred layout.
Where Are These Settings Found?
These settings are located inside the Settings section of VDM. Once configured, they impact how Insights behaves each time it is accessed or launched.
Insights Settings and Their Function
Data Location
Specifies where VDM should look for exported data when using the Export to Insights option in the Scheduler.
This must match the export location used in your jobs, or Insights will not find the correct files.
Tip: Keep your Scheduler export path and Data Location setting aligned to avoid missing or blank data grids in Insights.
Default Layout
This determines which layout is automatically loaded when Insights starts.
Set a specific file to always load your preferred dashboard.
Leave blank to start with a fresh layout each time.
Tip: Save a master Insights layout file and point to it here for a consistent launch experience.
Launch on Load
When enabled (True), Insights will open automatically when VDM launches—bypassing the standard VDM home screen.
Tip: Enable this if Insights is your go-to interface for reviewing data, so you skip extra clicks at launch.
Layout Location
This defines where VDM saves your layout files after edits or manual saves.
Ensuring this is a valid and accessible path avoids issues saving changes to your Insights dashboard.
Tip: Use a shared or cloud-synced location if multiple users need access to the same layouts.
Article Summary
The Insights settings in VDM provide control over how your Insights dashboards and data operate. With just four key settings—Data Location, Default Layout, Launch on Load, and Layout Location—you can streamline loading behavior, automate launch preferences, and avoid common configuration pitfalls. Setting these correctly ensures your exported data is found, your dashboards load consistently, and your workflow runs smoothly from startup.
