Article Goal
Enable Embedded Expressions in a View so that any expressions used are saved directly into the VDM View file—making them portable, shareable, and self-contained.
What Are Embedded Expressions?
Embedded Expressions allow any calculated fields (expressions) created in a view to be stored inside the .VDM file. This eliminates the need to recreate or manually re-share those expressions when distributing views to others.
Tip: With Embedded Expressions enabled, your colleagues will receive all the expressions used in your view—automatically.
Why Use Embedded Expressions?
Ensures expressions are retained when sharing views
Simplifies team collaboration and reduces rework
Maintains consistent calculated fields across environments
Important Note: Embedded Expressions apply only to the current view—they are not shared globally across VDM.
Steps to Enable Embedded Expressions
Step 1: Open Your View in VDM
Launch VDM and either create or open a view where expressions are in use.
Step 2: Access the View Options Tab
Navigate to the View Options section located on the ribbon bar at the top of the screen.
Step 3: Enable the Embed Option
Under the Expressions section of the ribbon:
Click the checkbox labeled Embed
This action will ensure that all expressions in the current view are saved within the view file.
Article Summary
Embedded Expressions in VDM are a powerful feature that allows expressions to travel with the view file—no separate setup needed. Enabling this feature ensures consistency across shared views and simplifies collaboration among teams.
Use Case: You build a view that includes several calculated fields for revenue projections. With Embedded Expressions turned on, anyone you send the view can open it with all expressions intact ready to run, no rework required.
