Formatting Chart Axis Values in Finished Reports

Formatting chart axis values can make Finished Reports easier to read and more consistent, especially when displaying currency, large numbers, dates, or other formatted values.

Axis formatting is configured in the Chart Designer within the Finished Reports Designer.

Why Format Chart Axis Values?

Formatting the X or Y axis helps make chart values easier to understand and present.

Common uses include:

  • Currency formatting
  • Number formatting
  • Date formatting
  • Decimal precision
  • Thousands separators
  • Other custom display formats

Formatting is applied to the selected chart axis or series label, depending on the chart type.

Step 1: Run the View

Open and execute the View in VDM so the report data is available.

Step 2: Open the Finished Reports Designer

Open the Finished Reports Designer for the View.

Step 3: Open the Chart Designer

Select the chart you want to modify.

Open the Chart Designer by editing the chart or right-clicking the chart and selecting Run Designer.

Step 4: Select the Axis

In the Chart Designer:

  1. Select the chart series you want to modify.
  2. Select the appropriate X Axis or Y Axis.

Pie Charts

Pie charts do not use traditional X and Y axes.

For pie charts, select the appropriate series and locate the Text Pattern setting under the series label or behavior properties.

Step 5: Open the Text Pattern Editor

Expand the Label properties for the selected axis.

Locate Text Pattern, and select the ... button to open the Pattern Editor.

Step 6: Format the Value

In the Pattern Editor:

  1. Locate the {V} value placeholder.
  2. Select the value inside the pattern.
  3. Choose the desired format options.

Depending on the selected format, you may be able to configure:

  • Format Type
  • Currency
  • Number formatting
  • Date formatting
  • Precision
  • Group separators
  • Units

The basic value-format syntax is:

{V:YourFormatHere}

Replace YourFormatHere with the format you want to apply.

Step 7: Preview and Verify

Select OK to apply the formatting changes.

Preview the Finished Report and verify that the chart displays the axis values using the expected format.

Repeat the process for the other axis or chart series as needed.

Save the Report

After confirming that the chart values are formatted correctly, save the Finished Report.
