Add multiple grids to a single VDM View to review the same results in different layouts. Use one grid to highlight exceptions and another to sort or group records for a different task.
What Are Additional Grids?
Additional grids provide separate layouts for the same dataset within a View. Each grid can have its own sorting, grouping, formatting, expressions, and grid filters.
Adding a grid gives you another way to review the returned data. To change which records the database returns, update the View’s filters or query and run the View again.
Why Use Multiple Grids?
Use multiple grids when you want to:
- Review the same results from different perspectives.
- Keep layouts for different tasks without creating a separate View for each layout.
- Highlight values that need attention in one grid while keeping another layout simple.
- Switch between different sorts, groupings, and calculated columns.
Video Tutorial
Step 1: Open or Create a View
Open an existing View or create a new one in VDM. Select Run View to load the results into the Data Grid.
Step 2: Add a New Grid
Select Add in the Grid section of the ribbon to create an additional grid.
Step 3: Name the New Grid
Enter a unique, descriptive name that identifies the grid’s purpose, such as Order Exceptions or Orders by Ship Name.
Repeat the add-and-name process for each additional grid you need.
Step 4: Select and Configure a Grid
Use the dropdown list in the grid controls to select the grid you want to work with.
Configure its sorting, grouping, formatting, expressions, or grid filters for the task you want to perform. Switch to another grid to configure a different layout.
Note: Grid layouts can differ, but saving a field’s display format for future use can apply that format whenever the field appears in other Views. Review the save-format prompt before choosing to remember a format.
Examples: Two Layouts for the Same Orders
Example Grid 1: Review Order Exceptions
Use this layout to identify orders with higher freight costs or longer shipping times.
- Sort: EmployeeID.
- Freight rule: Highlight values greater than 30 in green.
- Shipping-time expression: Calculate the number of days between OrderDate and ShippedDate, then highlight values greater than 5 in red.
The thresholds are examples. Choose values and colors that match your reporting needs.
Example Grid 2: Review Orders by Ship Name
Use a second layout to find orders alphabetically by Ship Name.
- Sort: Ship Name.
- Formatting: Leave out the exception-highlighting rules used in the first grid.
This layout provides a simpler way to look up and review records from the same dataset.
Verify the Grids
Switch between the grids and confirm that:
- Each grid appears in the dropdown with a recognizable name.
- The sorting, grouping, and formatting match the purpose of each layout.
- Any expressions and highlighting rules produce the expected results.
- Grid filters have not hidden records you need to review.
If a value appears unexpected, check the selected grid’s settings and the View’s returned data before changing the query.
Save the View
After verifying the grids, save the View to retain the changes. Reopen the saved View and confirm that the named grids and their layouts are available.
